ONE LOVE - Nicoletta Santoro

Who is your Favorite Author and what Book are you reading these days?

My favorite Author is Alberto Moravia. At the moment I am reading 'Interpreter of Maladies' by Jhumpa Lahiri.

You've managed to not only achieve incredible things throughout your career, but this is a re occurring theme with other areas of your life as well! How is it that you've managed to Accomplish everything to this day on top of managing to balance this with your own family and children? I'm sure many would be quite fascinated to hear the secrets of your multi tasking lifestyle and just how you pull it all off.

I have always been a positive person with drive, focus and discipline. I love my family and am passionate about my career, so I find a way to make both succeed.

I am always curious to view the favorite works of a person, and when looking through your site I noticed that you had your own section of your favorites. I find that there is continuity in your work and I'm curious as to the source. When looking at the French Vogue under your favorites that was shot by your wonderful Husband, Max Vadukul, I see adventurous make up and again the concept of a theatrical interpretation of fashion and beauty. This is something that can also be found in your works with Richard Avedon, and even the new stories that you've been doing with Richard Burbridge to this day. Is the source of this consistent theme your vision? Or something that you are drawn to in the taste of the photographers you choose to work with?

To have a vision is imperative. I have a strong imagination and I prefer to embrace fashion and beauty within a frame of emotions. Photographers I work with, such as the late Richard Avedon, Richard Burbridge, Steven Meisel, Peter Lindbergh and Max Vadukul all have the capability to bring my vision alive and incorporate an emotion which is vital to every image.

It's been said that you have a Talent on set with the girls, the nurturing matriarch who seems to understand each individual for what they are and help ease their anxieties while on set. What is it for you that makes a model the most desirable for any particular project?

A model's personality, intelligence, fragility, and emotions need to be displayed. She has to be able to interpret my vision, not to become a victim of it and be an active element in the image making process.

I think that everything current is made up of parts of both past and future combined, if you were able to re create any one shoot of your whole career to date, which would it be?

Helmet Newton. I worked with him when I was too young and too immature to understand his obsessions.

You've lived in New York City for sometime now, do you think you would ever move back to Italy?

I intend to retire back to Italy to spend my time in the country.

In a perfect world Models would be on every Cover and in every major Campaign (in my humble opinion!) However the Celebrity extravaganza has shown no signs of slowing down, what would you say is the main difference in shooting with a Celebrity Vs a Model? Surely a Model is more stimulating and capable in front of the camera, no? Or am I simply being biased...

A model is an interpreter. An actress has to be interpreted. This is the essential difference.

The branding of Nicoletta Santoro seems to be a well balanced compilation of art and Fashion, when working on set and choosing the pieces. is your inspiration to tell a story? Or is it simply an organic process that transpires while you adorn the model in your Selected Fashion?

I always have a reference, be it a movie, a book, a painting or an image that inspires myself and my team. But I believe in the organic process, which takes place on set. The creativity and spontaneity bring the unexpected, which is the essence of a memorable image.
